Abstract

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by keratinocyte hyperproliferation, immune dysregulation, oxidative stress, and impaired skin barrier function. Conventional topical therapies often show limitations such as poor penetration, local irritation, frequent application, and low patient compliance. Herbal based topical systems have gained considerable attention due to their improved safety and therapeutic potential. Bakuchi oil, obtained from Psoralea corylifolia, contains bioactive constituents such as bakuchiol and psoralen that exhibit anti inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiproliferative activities beneficial in psoriasis management. The present review highlights the pathophysiology of psoriasis, limitations of conventional topical therapy, and the therapeutic rationale of Bakuchi oil loaded hydrogels. Hydrogel systems provide enhanced skin hydration, improved spreadability, prolonged drug retention, and controlled drug release, thereby improving topical drug delivery and patient compliance. Advanced approaches such as nanoemulgels and nanoparticle loaded hydrogels further enhance skin permeation and therapeutic efficacy. Overall, Bakuchi oil loaded hydrogel systems represent a promising herbal strategy for effective and patient friendly topical management of psoriasis, although further clinical investigations are required to establish long term safety and efficacy.
